Which Cities Stay on GMT All Year?
The cities on GMT cluster in two regions: West Africa and the North Atlantic. Most sit near the equator, so daylight hours barely shift across the year. None observe daylight saving time. Clocks never move.

Figures come from GeoNames, as of the 30 September 2026 data snapshot. Accra and Reykjavik sit in the same metazone but use different IANA identifiers (Africa/Accra, Atlantic/Reykjavik); their populations are not in the current FACTS set, so they are excluded from the table above.
What Time Is It in Abidjan, Ivory Coast?
Why the clock never changes
Abidjan sits at 5.354°N, 4.002°W. That latitude, just north of the equator, flattens the daylight curve. The city gets between 11 hours 49 minutes and 12 hours 26 minutes of daylight. The annual swing is 37 minutes. No clock change is needed, and none is observed.
Sunrise and sunset, 2026
- 20 March (equinox): sunrise 06:20, sunset 18:27 (12 h 6 min of daylight)
- 21 June (solstice): sunrise 06:04, sunset 18:30 (12 h 26 min of daylight)
- 22 September (equinox): sunrise 06:05, sunset 18:12 (12 h 7 min of daylight)
- 21 December (solstice): sunrise 06:19, sunset 18:08 (11 h 49 min of daylight)
Business and markets
Business hours run 08:00 to 17:00 or 09:00 to 18:00, year-round. The BRVM (Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières), the West African regional stock exchange based in Abidjan, trades 08:00 to 12:00 GMT. Banks generally operate 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday. Government offices open 07:30 to 16:00. Shops and markets are open by 07:00 or 08:00 and close between 18:00 and 20:00.
Other Ivorian cities on the same clock
Ivory Coast dominates the list of GMT cities by population. Beyond Abidjan (6,321,017), the zone includes Abobo (1,340,083), Bouaké (832,371), Korhogo (440,926), Daloa (421,871), Koumassi (412,282), San-Pédro (390,654), Gagnoa (277,044), Yamoussoukro (275,686), Sinfra (245,226), Man (241,969), Marcory (214,061), and Bondoukou (141,568). All use Africa/Abidjan.
Why Is Monrovia, Liberia on GMT?
From local mean time to GMT
Monrovia (population 1,542,549) is the second-largest city on GMT in West Africa. Liberia once ran on its own local mean time: GMT minus 0 hours 44 minutes 30 seconds, a figure tied to its longitude. In 1972 the country aligned with the rest of the region and adopted UTC+0. It has stayed there since.
Daylight and daily rhythm
Monrovia sits at roughly 6.3°N. The sun rises and sets within a narrow band year-round. Business follows the same 08:00 to 17:00 pattern as Abidjan. No seasonal clock shift means no adjustment for international callers: when it is noon in Monrovia, the GMT offset is zero, every month.
Does Bissau, Guinea-Bissau Change Its Clocks?
Bissau (population 439,704) is one of the few mainland West African capitals on GMT besides Abidjan and Monrovia. It uses Africa/Bissau. The country does not observe daylight saving time. For scheduling purposes, Bissau is interchangeable with Abidjan: same offset, same stability, same 08:00 to 17:00 business window.
What Time Zone Is Danmarkshavn, Greenland In?
A weather station, not a town
Danmarkshavn, on the northeast coast of Greenland, has a population of about 50. It is a research station, not a city. Its IANA zone is America/Danmarkshavn, fixed at UTC+0 year-round. The rest of Greenland follows Atlantic Time (UTC−4 in winter, UTC−3 in summer). Danmarkshavn ignores that. It stays on GMT permanently, a quirk of the time zone database rather than a practical choice for residents.
Extreme light, static clock
At that latitude the sun behaves dramatically: near-continuous light in summer, near-continuous darkness in winter. The clock does not move to track it. Researchers at the station work to GMT regardless of whether the sun is up at midnight or absent at noon.
What It Is Like Living on GMT
Daylight stability near the equator
In Abidjan, the sun rises between 06:04 and 06:20 and sets between 18:08 and 18:30. The range is tight. There is no "spring forward," no "fall back," no dark afternoons at 16:00, no clock-change jet lag. Monrovia and Bissau share the same pattern: roughly 12 hours of light, every day.
Reykjavik breaks the pattern entirely. At 64.1°N, it gets about 21 hours of light in June and barely 4 in December. Yet Iceland stays on GMT. The workday starts at the same clock time all year; the sun's position simply shifts to extremes around it.
Business culture across the zone
- Banks: 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday; some Saturday morning hours in West African cities
- Government offices: 07:30 to 16:00 or 08:00 to 16:30
- Shops and markets: open by 07:00 or 08:00, close 18:00 to 20:00; markets may start earlier
- Schools: typically 07:30 to 08:00 start, finishing 12:00 to 14:00; some split shifts in hotter areas
- Meals: breakfast 06:00 to 08:00, lunch 12:00 to 14:00, dinner 18:00 to 20:00
- Friday prayers: in Muslim-majority areas, an extended lunch break for Jumu'ah
Scheduling across borders
GMT cities do not shift for daylight saving. That makes scheduling with them predictable. If you are in London, the difference is zero in winter and minus one hour in summer (when London moves to BST). If you are in New York, the difference is five hours behind in January and four hours behind in July.
The practical rule: when someone says "meet at 14:00 GMT," the wall clock in Abidjan, Monrovia, and Bissau reads 14:00. Every month. No exceptions.
How GMT Fits into Global Timekeeping
Who uses GMT as a reference
Aviation uses GMT (called Zulu time) for all flight plans, NOTAMs, and air traffic control communications. Maritime logs and navigation run on GMT. NATO forces coordinate in Zulu time. Servers are often set to UTC. Unix timestamps count seconds from 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. Forex markets reference GMT: the London session opens at 08:00 GMT in winter. The BBC World Service publishes schedules in GMT. Amateur radio operators log contacts in UTC.
GMT versus UTC
GMT and UTC read the same on a clock. The difference is technical. GMT is a time zone (UTC+0). UTC is an atomic time standard maintained by the BIPM in Paris. GMT can also refer to UT1, the astronomical time based on Earth's rotation, which drifts from UTC by up to 0.9 seconds. For civilian use they are interchangeable. For precision work, UTC is the correct term.
The IANA zone oddity
The IANA zone for UTC+0 is Etc/GMT. Developers should note that Etc/GMT+X zones have the sign reversed for historical POSIX compatibility: Etc/GMT-5 means UTC+5. Etc/GMT itself is straightforward: UTC+0, fixed, no daylight saving.
Countries on GMT year-round
The CLDR metazone "GMT" covers Africa/Abidjan, Africa/Bissau, Africa/Monrovia, Africa/Sao_Tome, America/Danmarkshavn, Antarctica/Troll, and Etc/GMT. Ivory Coast, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe use GMT all year. Iceland does the same, despite sitting west of the prime meridian. Parts of Greenland (Danmarkshavn) and Antarctica (Troll station) also stay on UTC+0 permanently.
GMT Questions People Get Wrong
Is the UK on GMT?
Only in winter. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, the UK moves to British Summer Time (UTC+1). Calling "London time" GMT in July creates a one-hour error.
Does GMT itself observe daylight saving?
No. GMT is fixed at UTC+0. The UK observes daylight saving; GMT does not.
Why do some African countries never change clocks?
They sit near the equator. Sunlight varies by roughly half an hour across the year. A one-hour seasonal shift would misalign clock time from solar time with no practical benefit.
Is GMT the same as Western European Time?
Same offset (UTC+0), different legal framework. WET is used in Portugal and, in winter, Ireland. Iceland uses GMT year-round.
What is Zulu time?
Military, NATO, and aviation jargon for UTC/GMT. A timestamp ending in "Z" (2025-01-20T01:56:25Z) means UTC.
Why does the Etc/GMT sign convention feel backwards?
POSIX compatibility. Etc/GMT-5 is UTC+5. Etc/GMT is UTC+0 and behaves as expected.
