Book a 16:00 GMT call in January and your Los Angeles client gets 8:00 AM. Book the same 16:00 GMT slot in July and they get 9:00 AM. Same GMT hour, different Pacific Time. The difference is not the conversion formula. It is the date.
PST is UTC-8. Subtract 8 hours from GMT and you have Pacific Standard Time. That holds from the first Sunday in November through the second Sunday in March. Outside that window, the West Coast runs on PDT (UTC-7). Subtract 7, not 8.
When Does Pacific Time Switch to PDT?
Pacific Daylight Time begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November. During those months, California, Los Angeles, and the rest of the US West Coast are on UTC-7.
If you type "GMT to PST" into a search box in July, you are asking the wrong question. You want GMT to PDT. The offset is 7 hours, not 8. Getting this wrong puts you an hour late to every meeting.

How to Schedule Calls Between GMT and the US West Coast
Pick a window and stick to it. The West Coast is 8 hours behind GMT in winter, 7 in summer. That makes morning calls the only reliable overlap.
In winter (PST, subtract 8): target 16:00-18:00 GMT. That lands at 8:00-10:00 AM in Los Angeles.
In summer (PDT, subtract 7): target 15:00-17:00 GMT. That lands at 8:00-10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time.
Do not schedule after 20:00 GMT. At 22:00 GMT in January, it is 2:00 PM PST (workable but late for the West Coast). At 22:00 GMT in July, it is 3:00 PM PDT. Push it later and you lose them.
Skip the 12:00 GMT slot. Noon GMT is 4:00 AM PST or 5:00 AM PDT. Nobody answers.
What to Check Before You Convert
- Find the date. Between the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, use PDT (GMT minus 7). Outside that range, use PST (GMT minus 8).
- Subtract the right offset. 8 for standard, 7 for daylight.
- Confirm the other side. If someone in San Francisco says "Pacific Time" in June, they mean PDT. If a London caller says "GMT" in August, they probably mean BST. Ask "Is that GMT or UK local time?" The UK runs on BST (UTC+1) in summer, not GMT. Confusing the two is the second most common error.
Why "GMT to PST" Searches Spike in Summer
People search the term they know. PST is the default label for the West Coast in many calendars and scheduling tools. In July, the correct offset is 7 hours. The search query still says PST. That mismatch produces wrong meeting times, missed flights, and 4:00 AM wake-up calls for people who subtracted 8 when they should have subtracted 7.
Do not trust the abbreviation in the search bar. Trust the date.
What Is the GMT to PST Offset in January vs July?
On 15 January 2026, Los Angeles is 8 hours behind GMT. Noon GMT is 4:00 AM in LA.
On 15 July 2026, Los Angeles is 7 hours behind GMT. Noon GMT is 5:00 AM in LA.
The shift is small in absolute terms. For a 9:00 AM meeting, it is the difference between a 17:00 GMT call (January) and a 16:00 GMT call (July). Get the date wrong and you dial in an hour late.
Which GMT to PST Converters Should You Skip?
Skip any converter that does not ask for the date. A static "GMT minus 8" tool is wrong half the year.
Skip the phrase "Pacific Time" in invitations. Write PST or PDT. Ambiguity costs you one hour.
Skip the assumption that GMT means UK time. GMT is a fixed UTC+0 zone used year-round in Ivory Coast, Liberia, and several other West African countries. The UK uses GMT only in winter. In summer, London is on BST (UTC+1). If you mean London time, say London time.
