The UK loses an hour of sleep on Sunday 29 March 2026. At 01:00 Greenwich Mean Time, clocks jump straight to 02:00 British Summer Time. The night shrinks to 23 hours. The morning after hits harder than a Monday usually does.
That date is not a suggestion. The Summer Time Act 1972 fixes the switch to the last Sunday in March, every year, no parliamentary debate required. Here is what changes, what does not, and what to do about it.
When do clocks go forward in the UK?
The clocks go forward at 01:00 GMT on the last Sunday in March. In 2026, that is Sunday 29 March. In 2027, it is Sunday 28 March. The rule never moves; the date drifts because the calendar does.
At that moment, the UK moves from GMT (UTC+0) to British Summer Time (UTC+1). The country stays on BST until the last Sunday in October.
What time does the change actually happen?
01:00 GMT becomes 02:00 BST in the same instant. The hour between 01:00 and 02:00 does not exist. Why 01:00 and not midnight? The timing avoids rolling the date backwards and keeps banks, exchanges and date-sensitive systems on the right calendar day before the shift hits.
What you notice:
- Saturday night: Set the clock forward before bed. Wake up an hour earlier than your body expects.
- Sunday morning: Sunrise and sunset both land roughly an hour later on the clock.
- Monday morning: The grogginess peaks. Commuters feel it most.
Why does the UK lose an hour of sleep in March?
Sixty minutes vanish. The clock skips them. That lost hour disrupts the circadian rhythm, which runs close to a 24-hour cycle. The Monday after the spring change reliably brings a spike in traffic incidents.
The trade-off is daylight. By late May, evening light stretches past 20:00. The UK adopted daylight saving in 1916 to cut fuel use in wartime. The logic has not changed.
How to remember which way the clocks go
Spring forward, fall back. In March, the days lengthen, so the clock jumps forward to match. In October, the days shorten, so the clock falls back. The sun does not change. The dial does.
What the March clock change does to your body, travel and tech
Your body. Go to bed 15 to 20 minutes earlier on the Friday and Saturday before the switch. Get bright light first thing on Sunday morning. Skip caffeine after lunch on Sunday. The adjustment takes less time if you front-load it.
Travel. Network Rail runs clock-change timetables. An overnight train on Saturday runs on GMT, then switches to BST mid-journey. Flights publish departure and arrival times in local time at each airport. A 09:00 GMT departure on Sunday is 10:00 BST. Check the zone, not just the hour.
Technology. Smartphones, laptops and smartwatches update themselves. Your car clock, microwave and the alarm clock in the spare room do not. Check every device with a quartz movement.
Finance. The London Stock Exchange opens at 08:00 local time year-round. In winter, that is 08:00 GMT. In summer, it is 08:00 BST, which is 07:00 GMT. Forex markets reference GMT as a baseline. When scheduling international calls, say "GMT" or "BST". "London time" means two different offsets depending on the month.

| 2026 | Sunday 29 March | 01:00 GMT → 02:00 BST |
| 2027 | Sunday 28 March | 01:00 GMT → 02:00 BST |
| 2028 | Sunday 26 March | 01:00 GMT → 02:00 BST |
| 2029 | Sunday 25 March | 01:00 GMT → 02:00 BST |
